Transgenerational Educational Tourism, Dharma Wanita Persatuan of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Jember

Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Jember University, held an intergenerational educational tour to several destinations on October 15, 2023. “Religion is there, tourism is there, and the most important thing is friendship between generations of DWP FMIPA UNEJ administrators and members,” said Nur Sa’dijah Achmad Saifullah, Chair of DWP FMIPA UNEJ. Several destinations are in Malang Regency and Batu City, including the Turen Mosque, Leswan Leather, which is a leather bag and wallet factory, Santerra de Laponte, and Lumbung Strawberry. “And of course, don’t forget to mention that there is a souvenir center to make your family happy at home,” she continued.

This event could be said to be special because several former DWP administrators and members took part in the educational tour. Mrs. Sumadi (wife of the first Dean of FMIPA UNEJ) and Mrs. Sudarmadji were seen together to maintain friendly relations. “Several female lecturers and educational staff also came along to experience a moment of refreshing between routines on campus,” said Nur Sa’dijah Achmad Saifullah. Several DWP FMIPA UNEJ members held this agenda as a place to strengthen ties between the FMIPA extended family and also as a place to learn about businesses that could be included in the DWP FMIPA UNEJ program. Collaborative Teaching: Philosophy of Science and Bioethics by Barlah Rumhayati, Ph.D. from Brawijaya University

Barlah Rumhayati, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., Head of the PhD Chemistry Study Program, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Brawijaya University, gave a lecture on Philosophy of Science and Bioethics for Master of Biology students, Department of Biology, FMIPA, University of Jember, on October 9 and 16, 2023. At the beginning of the lecture material, Dr. Barlah explained the meaning of the philosophy of science. “The philosophy of science is a branch of philosophy that studies and systematically questions the nature of scientific knowledge,” she explained. This scientific knowledge relates to philosophical and fundamental issues to achieve scientific knowledge.

Guided by Master of Biology FMIPA UNEJ Lecturer Purwatiningsih, S.Si, M.Si., Ph.D. collaborative teaching is held online. Dr. Barlah also gave the example that when preparing a thesis, master’s students must be systematic or sequential. “In preparing a thesis based on a problem, the solution or answer to the problem must be philosophical, systematic, and fundamental,” she continued. Animal Physiology Guest Lecture by Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir from Universiti Putra Malaysia

Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia gave a guest lecture on animal physiology (13/10). With the theme “Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology of Beef Cattle”, the lecture was attended by students of the Animal Physiology course, Biology Department, FMIPA UNEJ online. At the beginning, Dr. Noor Hisham introduced what is meant by endocrinology. “Endocrinology is the study of hormones, and hormones are very important for daily survival as chemical messengers that move from one cell to another,” he explained. This guest lecture event was moderated by Purwatiningsih, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D.

It is said that scientifically, hormones communicate this effect through their unique chemical structure, which is recognized by specific receptors on their target cells. “Hormones will tell us or animals how to control various physiological activities, such as growth, development, puberty, level of alertness, regulation of sugar and appetite, bone growth, and stress,” he said. Innovative, FMIPA UNEJ PKM-RE Team Overcomes Shrimp Pond Waste Using Shrimp Shell Biofocculant

“This research is expected to be an alternative to processing waste water from shrimp ponds,” said Rikma Dwi Mukharomah. The research was carried out for 4 months, starting June 16, 2023, at the Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, FMIPA, University of Jember. Furthermore, Rikma explained that chitosan-based bioflocculant is synthesized from shrimp shells through several stages, including deproteination, demineralization, and deacetylation. “The result obtained after the deproteination and demineralization processes is chitin, while from the chitin deacetylation process, chitosan is obtained,” she explained.

Ready to Work After Graduation: Two FMIPA UNEJ Alumni Share Their Experiences

Jember University’s FMIPA Alumni Sharing was held again to welcome the graduation for the 3rd academic year 2023-2024 (6/10). Presenting two FMIPA alumni who provided experience entering the world of work after the graduation procession. Andy Setyawan, an alumni of the 2007 FMIPA Mathematics Department, started sharing his experiences with prospective graduates. “You need an advantage to compete with other job seekers, to be a differentiator so that companies will pay attention,” he began. Andy said that after graduating with a high GPA, it turned out that he needed to be supported by other capable skills. The ability to think critically, be quick and efficient, be able to multitask, and be ready to work under pressure is also required.

“We must have this in order to be able to compete with other prospective workers, especially since the company we are targeting is a large company,” said Andy, who currently serves as Control Room and Patroller Team Leader at PT. Solusi Bangun Indonesia, Tuban. He also said that when he applied for a job in the past, he armed himself with more skills in processing data via Excel. “Maybe you all ask, Why Excel? Because if we master Excel, it will be able to process thousands of pieces of data quickly and accurately,” he continued. Continue reading →

DWP FMIPA UNEJ Routinely Distributes Educational Donations to FMIPA UNEJ Students

The Dharma Wanita Persatuan FMIPA again provided educational donations for FMIPA students in need at the regular FMIPA DWP management meeting. (6/10). Located in the meeting room of the FMIPA Gekanat building, Nur Sa’dijah Achmad Saifullah, Chair of the FMIPA DWP, symbolically handed over educational donations to the Dean of FMIPA UNEJ, Drs. Achmad Sjaifullah, M.Sc., Ph.D. “I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to DWP FMIPA, which routinely provides charity through its social programs. I also hope that this donation will be able to lighten the burden on students who need it,” said the Dean.

Donations will be distributed through Vice Dean II FMIPA Purwatiningsih, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., who attended the occasion. Furthermore, the Dean of FMIPA said that apart from this agenda, there were several DWP FMIPA activities that were social in nature and also supported FMIPA and even UNEJ activities. “For some time, DWP FMIPA has also provided donations to members and actively participates if there is an agenda from the university, such as a choir competition that is regularly held every year,” he said.
