Guest Lecture at the FMIPA Chemistry Department Presented Ari Setyono, Pertamina Offshore Pipeline Practitioner

The Chemistry Department, FMIPA UNEJ, held a guest lecture presenting Ir. Ari Setyono, Pertamina offshore pipeline practitioner (17/5). Ari has experience working for several large oil companies overseas as a pipeline engineer. “The material will be more about my personal experience when working abroad; we can compete with foreign workers in the fields we are good at,” said the ITS Mechanical Engineering alumnus. We are told about installation techniques and pipe maintenance, which involve chemistry, namely corrosion. “At the beginning, I will introduce pipe installation techniques, and later, the part that will be interesting for chemistry students is about corrosion,” he continued.

Ari explained in general how the pipe is located on the seabed, how to install it, and how to maintain the stability of the pipe by having to know about soil studies, soil compression, and the process when approaching the beach. “Apart from installation, we must also pay attention to pipe protection from other elements, such as shipping lanes and port areas with lots of anchors that could endanger the pipe route,” he explained. Protection related to chemistry, namely corrosion, is discussed, including the form of loss and the rate of corrosion. The discussion was interesting because, in chemistry, there was a course that dissected corrosion. Through this guest lecture, it can attract interest so that there will be a return to the corrosion chemistry course. Continue reading

Guest Lecture Prof. Akhmaloka, Ph.D. : Tata Kelola Menuju Universitas Berkualitas Dunia

FMIPA University of Jember held a guest lecture by presenting Prof. Akhmaloka, Ph.D., from the Bandung Institute of Technology (30/1). With the theme of Tata Kelola Menuju Universitas Berkualitas Dunia (World Class University), the guest lecture presented the FMIPA community in the Physics Auditorium. The Rector of ITB for 2010-2015 began his presentation by telling about his journey to a world-class university. “You need a fundamental understanding of world-class universities, not just rankings; leadership support is also the main key, and strategies to achieve them,” said Prof. Akhmaloka, Head of the WCU-DIKTI Adhoc Team.

Strategies towards becoming a world-class university include increasing academic reputation, graduates, research, internationalization, and funding. “We will thoroughly examine the journey to becoming a world-class university one by one,” he continued. Simply put, a world-class university is a university with quality that is recognized by the world. Furthermore, Prof. Akhmaloka said that these qualities must be recognized by the world community. “So university rankings are needed to measure this quality in a systematic, measurable, and recognized manner,” he said. Animal Physiology Guest Lecture by Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir from Universiti Putra Malaysia

Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia gave a guest lecture on animal physiology (13/10). With the theme “Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology of Beef Cattle”, the lecture was attended by students of the Animal Physiology course, Biology Department, FMIPA UNEJ online. At the beginning, Dr. Noor Hisham introduced what is meant by endocrinology. “Endocrinology is the study of hormones, and hormones are very important for daily survival as chemical messengers that move from one cell to another,” he explained. This guest lecture event was moderated by Purwatiningsih, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D.

It is said that scientifically, hormones communicate this effect through their unique chemical structure, which is recognized by specific receptors on their target cells. “Hormones will tell us or animals how to control various physiological activities, such as growth, development, puberty, level of alertness, regulation of sugar and appetite, bone growth, and stress,” he said. In short, hormones influence aspects of our daily lives to ensure the body maintains the balance necessary for health and survival. Continue reading
